Twenty-seven people died on New Zealand roads in April. This is 4 fewer than April 2015 and 4 more than the average April road toll for the last five years.
To the end of April this year 117 people have died on New Zealand roads. This is 5 more than at the same time last year.
- In the 12 months to the end of April 2016, 324 people died on our roads. This is 17 more than the 12 months to the end of April 2015.
During April, 10 of the deaths were car or van passengers, 9 were drivers, 4 were pedestrians, 3 were motorcyclists and 1 was a cyclist.
Twenty-three of the 27 deaths were in open road crashes. Seven were in single vehicle crashes in which a driver lost control of the vehicle or ran off the road, 7 were in head-on crashes, 4 were in collisions with pedestrians and 4 were in intersection collisions.
Of the 19 vehicle occupants who died, 8 were not restrained at the time of the crash.

Note: Preliminary fatal crash reports are submitted within 24 hours of a crash related death. Full injury crash reports are submitted only after the crash investigations are completed, so there is a lag in the reporting of injury crashes.

Trends
Since 1990 the number of vehicles on the road has increased by 69 percent while Police reported injuries have dropped by 27 percent, road deaths have dropped by 57 percent and the number of days spent in hospital as a result of road crashes has dropped by 59 percent.
