In 2014, the Ministry commissioned the Transportation Research Centre (TRC) at the University of Auckland to advise on the design of a New Zealand National Transport Model to enhance the Ministry’s intermodal transport modelling capabilities.
This model aims to provide the tools to compare alternative local/regional/national transport policies against a range of scenarios, taking into account the major factors that influence future travel patterns.
Developing such a model will enable the Ministry and Crown agencies to develop a more informed view of the future transport system, including required future transport investments.
TRC undertook an international/national best practice review and delivered a series of six reports outlining how the Ministry and Crown agencies can develop the necessary capabilities.
In addition, the Ministry commissioned Prof. Benjamin Heydecker of the Centre for Transport Studies, University College London, to peer review the reports.
